E.A. Qual è il tuo processo di creazione? Parti da un’immagine,...

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

E.A. What is your creation process? From an image or an idea? Or from other?

The so-called inspiration for me usually starts when a series of initially random ideas converge into a clear picture, the starting point of a process that can last longtime, at times years. In this case the art work becomes more of a project which in my case can lead to life changes and to radical questioning of methodologies and conceptual framework previously used. I gather ideas in many different ways but especially through researching into specific topics, such as Science, Science Fiction and Architecture.

E.A. There are some very important interdisciplinary influences in your videos? For example music, cinema, painting?

For the making of my videos I often collaborate with sound artists or, even when I use environmental sound, this is always accurately selected for the moving images. In my most recent piece, ‘le Voyage dans la Lune’ – title clearly inspired by the 1902 Méliès film – I used images that I previously sent to the Moon and back using a technology I personally developed during my residency at Dwingeloo radio telescope in The Netherlands. For this film I used a sound score provided by JAXA, the Japanese Space Agency: the music here is the ‘sonification’ of the topography of the Moon, different pitches correspond in fact to high or low rise of the Lunar surface.

E.A. Which videomakers or filmmakers have influenced you?

I am very inspired by early photography and film pioneers, as well as 1960s conceptual artists such as Robert Smithson and contemporary film-makers, working between the fields of fiction and documentary, Werner Hergog being one of them.

_________________________________________________________________________________

There is a five generations family dedicated to the ‘fireworks art’, Grucci’s company, the oldest and most renowned of America in this field. Among the exponents of the fifth generation is Felix, manager and ‘computer genius’, creator of a software capable to build images in mid-air, to program and monitor via computer each grenade outbreak at right moment and height, to avoid relapse lapilli on the public. The “Grucci fireworks” illuminated the inauguration of U.S. presidents, the Olympics, economic summits, world fairs and supported the Chinese artist Cai Guo-art Qiang, producing, among others, in 2003 the rainbow over the East River in New York, for the opening of the new MoMA in Queens. There are fires, however, which are fleeing from computerization and the logic of the spectacle. These are proposed by Roni Lanav and Haidi Motola in the video ‘Fireworks’ (2009), fires that mask the discomfort of Israel, the contradiction inherent socio-political, exposing them. The mask of a festive country hides a reality of war and strife, war on Gaza – the “soundtrack” of the video. Henri Cartier-Bresson claimed, although in a different context, that the power of a single image expresses the essence of things infinitely better than any word. In a sky “electrified”, the artists question the illusive power of the image in sick fetish of our generation and push to pay attention to grammar, phonetics, to build with perception and consciousness another reality, which – perhaps – is the most probable, and to touch the impenetrability of appearance.

Roni Lanav & Haidi Motola, Fire Works, 2009, 4’59”, videostill

Conduciamo molte ricerche in merito all’oggetto delle nostre opere.

E.A. Quali videomakers o registi vi hanno influenzato?

R.L & H.M. Per Fire Works in particolare – Eyal Sivan, Jean Luc Godard, Yael Bartana, e poi…molti altri.

________________________________________________________________________________________

E.A. What is your creation process? From an image or an idea? Or from another?

R.L & H.M. Because we work together and not individually, we are influenced from each other, thus, our works go through a long process of a dialogue and a deep discourse. We always read a lot of researches regarding the subject of our works. In general, our works always start from an idea, from a concept. There are also works, that start from a clear image which we translate to words, to an idea, and then back again to a stronger based image.
Fire works specifically is part of a larger project about collective memory and nationalism in the Israeli-Jewish society. The fire works are a strong and meaningfull image-part of a ceremony, we gather to watch them- a unifing fascination. But there is also another side. The same explosive material is used to make bombs, to kill. The other side are the Palestinians – the soundtrack is from the bombardments on Gaza. The same celebration day is also a memorial day, memorial of a disaster, of the Nakba.

E.A. There are some very important interdisciplinary influences in your videos? For example music, cinema, painting?

R.L & H.M. For first, we are influenced from the social-political reality we live in. That’s what derives us to work, to deal with. It is not the interdiciplinarity in itself or any specific dicipline, for that matter, the issue. It’s the concept, the ideas and the process that leads us and determines the medium (or mediums). We both come from photography and video, so within the art field we are largely influenced from both, but open also to other fields, from documentary to poetry and music.

E.A. Which videomakers or filmmakers have influenced you?

R.L & H.M. Specifically to this work – Eyal Sivan, Jean Luc Godard, Yael Bartana, and many more.

E.A. Quali videomaker o registi ti hanno influenzato?

R.A.K. La pittura.

E.A. Quali videomaker o registi ti hanno influenzato?

E.A. What is your creation process? Does it start from an image, an idea, or from something else?

E.A. Quali videomaker o registi ti hanno influenzato?

I.B. Bill Viola, Patrick Bergeron, Douglas Gordon, David Lynch, Todd Rohall e così via.

____________________________________________________________________________________

E.A. What is your creation process? Does it start from an image, an idea, or from something else?

I.B. My approach to how I create my art, including video works, is utterly conceptual (from idea to image). I carefully select the best medium for an initial idea I wish to materialise, or better still visualise. After selecting the medium (also if its video), I contextualise the idea, collect theoretical background, research texts, Internet sources, and only then do I move on to the production process. Neither the production nor the quality of the material are the most important, they only come second, although I do try and use minimal standards for galleries and museums, such as mini DV or HD video. Again, the final product, any work in its complete form, will depend on the kind of effect it is meant to have on the audience: subversive, challenging, psychological…

E.A. Are your works influenced by other artistic disciplines, such as music, cinema, painting?

I.B. I have been greatly influenced by Gilles Deleuze, because I came to realise that all his postulates on the theory of film and moving images may easily be applied in any analysis of any work that has to do with moving pictures (film, video, installation, environment, etc.). Also, his terminology and his thinking opened the door for me into a world of both practical and theoretical dealings with moving images, because Deleuze developed a complete philosophy of moving images. There has been a change in new video art in terms of what is seen as important, from what images show to what they provoke and how they affect the body and senses, resulting in complex audio-visual and haptic effects.

E.A. Which are the videomakers who have influenced you the most?

I.B. Bill Viola, Patrick Bergeron, Douglas Gordon, David Lynch, Todd Rohall and so on.
